Naturopathic Medicine

Naturopathy is not a medical specialty but a separate and distinct health care tradition: an art, science, philosophy, and practice to prevent and treat illness. Naturopathic medicine is rooted in the belief that the body has an innate healing capacity, and as a result, the recommendations that naturopathic doctors make combine the wisdom of nature with the rigors of science.

Naturopathic Doctors (ND) seek to restore and maintain optimal health in their patients by focusing on physical, mental, emotional, genetic, environmental, spiritual, and social factors that can become barriers to health. NDs spend extensive time educating patients about the benefits of adopting healthy lifestyles and provide counseling throughout this process so that their patients are successful when implementing life changes. Dietary, sleep, stress management, and movement recommendations form the foundations of a naturopathic health approach, and these foundations are built using natural remedies such as herbs, nutrients, and homeopathy.

Naturopathic doctors are the original integrative doctors as they are uniquely trained in holistic and natural medicine, starting on their first day of naturopathic medical school. Like their conventional medical doctor counterparts, NDs are educated in four- to five-year-doctoral medical programs, and receive dedicated training in the basic medical sciences (conventional diagnostic and treatment methods) in addition to their extensive training in natural medicines. Naturopathic doctors work collaboratively within the health care system, routinely teaming with other providers to offer the best patient care possible.
