Erectile Dysfunction (ED) is a condition in which a man regularly finds it difficult to get or keep a firm erection. There are many possible causes of ED, and they can include both emotional and physical conditions. Normal erectile function can be affected by problems with blood supply, hormones, nerve supply, and physical condition of the penis. The Massachusetts Male Aging Study, which was completed in 1994, found that around 52 percent of men ages 40 -70 experience some form of ED. However, ED is a treatable condition.
Specific treatment for erectile dysfunction will be determined by the doctor based on:
- Your age, overall health, and medical history
- Extent of the disease
- Your tolerance and preference for specific therapies
Recommendations may include lifestyle and nutrition modifications. Some of the treatments available at Wellife Center for ED include:
Hormone replacement therapy
Hormonal abnormalities, such as increased prolactin (a hormone produced by the anterior pituitary gland), steroid abuse, too much or too little thyroid hormone, and low testosterone can contribute to ED. Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) replaces fallen hormone levels with plant-based hormones that are chemically identical to those produced in the human body. Testosterone replacement therapy is available as a cream or gel, topical solution, skin patch, injectable form and pellet form placed under the skin.
Phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors
Viagra (sildenafil) and Cialis (tadalafil) are the two most commonly prescribed medications in this category. They work on the vascular system to increase blood flow into the penis to help produce an erection before intercourse with or without sexual arousal. At Wellife Center we can compound a custom formulation of these medications based on your specific needs.
When PDE5 or other oral medications are contraindicated are simply do not work, penile injections are another alternative for helping men achieve an erection before intercourse. Penile injections are self-administered directly into the corpora cavernosa, or the penis erection chambers located on each side of the penis, using a small hypodermic needle. We offer the following injectable prescriptions:
- Bi-Mix: An injectable formula containing a mix of two medications—Papaverine which works to expand the blood vessels, and Phentolamine which relaxes the smooth muscle and elevates cardiac output for increased blood flow to the groin.
- Tri-Mix: An injectable formula containing a mix of three medications—alprostadil, phentolamine and papaverine. Alprostadil provides an additional t blood flow boost.
- Quad-Mix: An injectable formula containing a mix of four different medications to help patients achieve an erection by directing blood flow to the groin—prostaglandin E, papaverine, phentolamine, and atropine.
This is a naturally occurring compound composed of amino acids that acts on the nervous system to increase sexual desire. It has been found to be effective in 80% of men who do not respond well to PDE5’s.
Natural Healing For ED
It is now known that, for most men, the source of erectile dysfunction is caused by physical problems, usually related to the blood supply of the penis and often times complicated by Peyronie’s disease (distortion or curvature of the penis). Shock wave therapy treat both blood supply and curvature of the penis.
Erectile function correlates with the level of blood flow to the penis. Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT) improves blood flow and can be used to produce fuller erections for men with and without ED. ESWT causes new blood vessels to be produced in the body where the sound waves are applied. The sound waves also work to break up plaque that can accumulate in the arteries of the penis, opening them wider to increase blood flow to the area. Acoustic wave therapy can regenerate aging blood vessels as well as stimulate the production of new blood vessels to create a comprehensive rejuvenation of the penis and its functionality. Results are enhanced with repeated treatments.
The Shock-Wave treatment also works to correct the penile curvature associated with Peyronie’s disease. We use a special P-Wave for this procedure. The P-wave breaks apart the vascular plaque that causes the curvature. And finally, we use nutrient therapy and a topical gel to further help break up the fibrous plaque.
