Therapeutic Massage Questions and Answers
Are you stressed out or have a strained muscle? The massage therapist at Wellife Ageless Center uses ultrasound and massage therapy to help relieve the pain. Please call us for more information or book an appointment online. We serve patients from Atlanta GA, Sandy Springs GA, Dunwoody GA, Brookhaven GA, Buckhead GA, Alpharetta GA and Norcross GA.
Therapeutic massages involve the physical manipulation of the muscles in order to facilitate healing and promote proper function. It differs from a typical massage which aims only to induce relaxation, and not to restore function. Every year millions of therapeutic massages are performed, with best results after several sessions.
What is therapeutic massage?
Therapeutic massage refers to any type of massage therapy that helps reduce stress, relieve pain, and work on a specific problem — such as an injured rotator cuff. The therapeutic massages offered at Wellife Center involve deep tissue massages, that will heal strained muscles, break down scar tissue and get your blood circulating. This can be applied on the neck, back and/or shoulders. If you are experiencing extreme tenderness in a certain area, the therapist will apply less pressure. A good massage therapist will apply the techniques that will best benefit your specific situation and apply the right amount of pressure to address your need.
In addition to deep tissue massage, there are several different types of therapeutic massage, such as:
- neuromuscular massage
- myofascial massage
- trigger point therapy
- sports massage
Depending on what your body needs, many therapists will use a combination of techniques. In addition, therapists will often take additional classes in to learn and practice different techniques.
Because it is a great way to manage pain, most patients are interested in deep tissue massage. As well as the other therapeutic massage methods, deep tissue massage can provide you with a lot of relief from chronic pain. Many of our clients come in for back, shoulder and neck pain, a side effect of sitting in an office all day.
How does ultrasound work with massage?
Ultrasound works in a manual way. The device mechanically vibrates which produces sound energy and consequently high frequency sound waves. In a mechanical way, these sound waves interact with and excite cells, akin to the way that wind rustles the leaves on a tree. The effect this has on cells is to stimulate and enhance healing by making the cells work harder and more efficiently. By ‘exciting’ the cell, the levels of activity are increased, which promotes healing.
To allow the sound waves to pass through to reach the deeper tissues, a special type of gel is used that conducts the sound waves between the device head and the skin, as tissues will naturally have resistance to the passage of sound waves.
Many of us have experienced music playing through very loud speakers; it is tangible throughout our bodies. If the volume is turned down, the sound waves cannot be felt. This is also seen in opera singers who are able to break a glass by singing certain notes.
The ultrasound waves can reach different areas by altering the intensity of the sound waves. For example, a different intensity of sound wave would be used on a large muscle compared to an elbow joint. The intensity of the sound waves will depend on which tissues are being targeted. It is believed that ultrasound can speed up the rate of healing, enhance the quality of tissue repair and reparations to the normal physiological processes by 10-15%.
